THE CREATINE CRAZE
This is part 3 of our Summer Series where we are offering short tips to help you eat better and feel better with easy ways to eat clean.
Creatine vs Collagen: Which Should You Choose?
Are you confused about whether you should be supplementing with creatine or collagen? I know I am, and I'm a health coach who went to school for this stuff!
Here's the one thing I know for certain: before you buy any supplement, use your food first. I'm always a "food first" kind of person because who knows if what you're buying actually contains what it claims or does what it says it does?
Start with Natural Sources
Shoot for natural sources of protein to build and maintain muscle. But if you know protein is just hard for you to get enough of, then yes, these supplements can be useful.
About Collagen
Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body. A pure collagen supplement (check your labels - is it third-party tested? Is it NSF or USP certified?) can be good for you, and your body will use it the way it needs. Remember, your body is smart!
About Creatine
Creatine is having a moment right now, but truthfully, the last time I heard about it was when my older brothers were practicing football twice a day and wanted to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger.
But the new studies on creatine - especially for women, muscle maintenance, and COGNITIVE health - are compelling. Recent research shows creatine may support:
Muscle building
Muscle maintenance
Brain Health Support
So Which One Should You Take?
It depends on your goals:
Choose Collagen if:
You have joint issues or concerns about overall collagen production
You want to support skin elasticity and joint health
You're focused on connective tissue recovery
Choose Creatine if:
You're trying to build muscle and support brain health
You know you don't eat anywhere near enough protein to support your level of strength training
You want to enhance workout performance and recovery
You're interested in the cognitive benefits
The Bottom Line
Both supplements serve different purposes and can complement each other. Many people actually use both. The key is understanding your specific goals and choosing quality, third-party tested products.
A few brands I love: Thorne, Momentous, Naked (all third-party tested)
Remember: Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.
